A late goal by veteran Efosa Eguakon in added time secured all points for Rivers United as they defeated FC Ifeanyi Ubah by two goals to one at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium Port Harcourt in one of Match Day 24 fixtures of the Nigerian Professional Football League played on Sunday.

Tactian Yaw Preko made just two changes to the side that defeated ABS FC in midweek as Adou Blaise who skippered the side got the nod over Adeleye Olamilekan while Egbeta Michael replaced Tamen Medrano in the rejigged setup.

The home side were the team to create the first chance of the encounter as Ifeanyi Okoye’s effort in the 7th minute from a shot was high and wide after being set up well by Atuloma Emeka. The Warriors responded immediately with a chance of their own as Msonter and Bright exchanged passes in midfield threading the ball the way of Obaje who crossed for Seka Pascal with his unconvincing headed effort sailing wide. In the 23rd minute, Goalkeeper Bamba was called into action as he parried away to safety an inviting cross from Odumegwu which flashed through the box begging for finishing. Godwin Obaje came close to scoring in the 28th minute from a headed effort as he went for precision instead of power after being fed by Seka Pascal who benefitted from an Emeka Atuloma’s lethargy and momental loss of concentration however his effort was well saved by Goalkeeper Akande Abiodun.

An effort by an unmarked Lukman Mohammed off an Odumegwu John’s assist in the 31st minute was poor and made light for Goalkeeper Bamba. Defender Adou Blaise made sure scores remained even before the break after clearing a ball inside the box from a good build up play between Sakin Bolaji and Ayo Saka.

The Second half commenced with some intent shown by the host, Emeka Atuloma in the 47th minute missed a sighter as his wayward shot went high and wide from a Gabriel Olalekan’s through ball. Bolaji Sakin gave the host the lead in the 61st minute from the spot after an Ayo Saka’s shot inside the box came off Eze’s hand with the referee pointing to the spot.

In a replica situation Prince Aggreh restored parity for the Warriors in the 80th minute scoring from the spot after skipper Festus Austine handled the former Kano Pillars’ man effort inside the box from a rebound off a Seka Pascal’s shot which hit the woodwork after the Ivorian’s dazzling footwork, dribbling Zoumana Doumbia and Ifeanyi Nweke.

Rivers United would go on to win the game in injury time benefiting from a sloppy play by Seka Pascal who should have cleared the ball but instead embarked on a tirade of overhead dribbling as substitute Nzube Anazemba got the ball in the process initiating a quick counter with the final ball somehow getting into the path of Efosa Eguakon whose thunderous shot into the roof of the net left Goalkeeper Bamba with no chance.

RIVERS UNITED    2 (BOLAJI SAKIN: PEN-61′, EFOSA EGUAKUN: 90+2′)

FC IFEANYIUBAH  1 (AGGREH PRINCE: PEN-80′)

With the result FC Ifeanyi Ubah now drop two places down the NPFL log to 4th position and will face Wikki Tourist next sunday in Match Day 25.
