The Anambra Warriors faced off against Akwa United in Matchday 35 of the ongoing Nigerian Professional Football League season in a game of epic continental proportions pitting two teams vying for the available slots to represent the country in CAF Inter Club Competitions next season.
Five Changes were made to the side that lost in Maiduguri to El Kanemi Warriors in Matchday 34 as Coach Yaw Preko restored Huan John, Ikeokwu Patrick, Osanga King, Kone Yaya and Onuigbo Ifeanyi ahead of Maamo Joseph, Magbisa Wisdom, Nkrumah Douglas, Bright Onyedikachi and Obaje Godwin respectively.
The NPFL Galacticos emerged victorious by a slender Goal to Nil courtesy of King Osanga’s well taken free kick in a very physical and hard fought encounter as both sides matched each other in all ramifications of the game as the lone goal was all that was needed to separate the two sides.
The first half started on a very difficult note and as such was the summary of the half where chances were few and far between in a half that saw the physicality of the game come to a head as Chigozie Chilekwu got sent off after receiving two yellow cards for two cynical fouls in the space of 20 minutes and the best chance of the half was actually a near miss as Osanga’s free kick was inches wide and Musa Newman was through on goal but was brilliantly intercepted by Isaac Baadu after Olamilekan Adeleye made a howler of his clearance in front of the box.
The second half started on a superb note for the Anambra Warriors as King Osanga got fouled on a quick counter but dusted himself and curled a volley beyond the reach of Goalkeeper Iwu to put the hosts ahead in the 47th minute of the encounter.
The second half also was as tight as the first but had more chances as Bright Onyedikachi on a solo run struck a beautiful belter in the 80th minute but his effort was saved by Goalkeeper Iwu while Akwa United got some few chances of theirs like Inah’s Free Kick that was saved by the Warriors shotstppper Drissa Bamba and Friday Ubong’s own free kick that was blocked by the wall and cleared by Ifeanyi Onuigbo in a summary of such a very cagey game that had little chances between two big giants of the Nigerian Professional Football League.
