An Adebayo Waheed’s solitary strike in the 19th minute was all the Olukoya Boys needed to bring to an end the Anambra Warriors 8-game unbeaten run in the league on Sunday as MFM FC defeated FC Ifeanyi Ubah by a goal to nil in one of the NPFL Match Day 22 fixtures.
Hitherto to the commencement of the game, The technical crew led by Coach Yaw Preko made three changes to the side that defeated Kano Pillars last weekend as stand in skipper Elu Wilson returned to the starting eleven with Osia Felix and Bright Onyedikachi making the team ahead of Prince Aggreh, Msonter Tony and Valentine Nwabili. There was a place in the team for Goalkeeper Traore Sory and striker Chijioke Alakwe alongside new acquisitions Baadu Isaac and Douglas Nkrumah all on the substitute bench.
Both sides started the encounter with some sense of urgency but the waterlogged state of the pitch was always going to pose a big threat for the smooth flow of the ball, Nevertheless the Olukoya Boys were the team that created the first real effort in the 11th minute as Brossa Shola and Onuwa Chukwuma exchanged couple of passes in the midfield area with the latter threading the ball the way of Adebayo Waheed who squared for a well positioned Sikiru Olatunbosun to finish but defender Adou Blaise was on hand to cut off the effort for a corner kick which was wasted by the host. The Anambra Warriors reacted immediately with a well curled effort from King Osanga from a free kick which was saved by Goalkeeper Folarin Abayomi after Tamen Medrano was fouled close to the box.
Adebayo Waheed got the curtain raiser and eventual match winner benefiting from a poor communication between Felix Osia and Stephen Eze with unmarked Odey Stephen teeing Adebayo who lobbed his effort above the onrushing Goalkeeper Drissa Bamba. Adebayo almost doubled the lead in the 22nd minute but for a dreadful finishing after receiving an inch perfect pass from Sikiru Olatunbosun. In the 24th minute Goalkeeper Bamba kept the game alive for the Warriors parring over the upright an Onuwa Chukwuma’s thunderous effort which was the last clear cut chance for both sides before the half gradually came to a halt.
In the second half, FC Ifeanyi Ubah kicked off proceedings on a better note with surging and darting runs across the flanks from Bright Onyedikachi and Osanga King. The quick feet and adrenaline rush nearly paid off with two successive set piece situations in the 52nd minute with the Olukoya Boys doing just enough to retain their lead by not conceding from the corner kicks. FC Ifeanyi Ubah should have restored parity in the 58th minute after striker Obaje Godwin won a corner kick, The resultant effort was well taken by substitute Loute Isaac with Obaje who was totally unmarked scuffing his effort wide. Five minutes from time Seka Pascal almost leveled proceeding from close range but his effort was well saved by Goalkeeper Folarin Abayomi. The final chance in added time came the way of defender Eze Stephen from Isaac Loute’s freekick but the giant defender who beat the offside trap and was unmarked couldn’t make the best of the opportunity as his headed effort sailed over the upright with the centre referee calling time on the game.
